MATAS GAUČAS

Lithuanian ceramic artist and designer

I'm a ceramic artist based in Vilnius, Lithuania. In my artistic practice I try to explore clay as a universal material that can be used to make almost any shape or color. Technically digging through ceramic art I try to express complicated thoughts and consider eternal processes, contemplating ideas that cannot be known. Most of my recent art projects deal with non gallery environments, object's relationship with status of artwork, question of my own free will. These are either realistic or abstract objects, made in various temperatures and techniques, different formats, but always wondering about life itself as an object of infinite depth.

House of Seaweed is a set of high fired ceramic tiles imitating a popular seaweed snack. Idea is to express the fragility of ecological systems and interconnectedness of natural and human made worlds. Like a gambler, we, as humanity, are building our structures using all nature can give, we try to build our tower as high as possible, risking it might fall, hoping it will only fall, but that it will not break.
